As a songwriter, I know how to compose a catchy hook and resolve a phrase, but I understand that the evidence of truly great music is that it remains fresh-sounding. No matter how often you hear it, the ear is delighted, and both body and soul become engaged. A perfect pop song — it engages you from the first piano riff, from the redundant rhythm guitar to the bass line, the lead chord progression, to the perfect vocal. Here are five of my favorites. Sinnerman catches your ear the moment it starts, with a piano looping a lick while a snare drum interrupts it at a frantic pace that takes a few moments to catch up with the piano. From here Simone spins the tale of a sinner who is seeking shelter on the day of judgment, while the music continues to build each verse until she sings — or keens:. This is the most overtly religious song on this list. Cash tells a story of Jesus calling him to warn the sinners that He will cut them down. The beat slowly drags us through a mist — that twilight between waking and sleep — and we enter a subconscious nightly struggle to find faith.

Although the band courted controversy by offering to pinch-hit for Christ, it avoided sacrilege by limiting the purview of this personal Jesus.
Secular Songs About Faith
Mauricio Artieda. It is extremely Catholic to know how to redeem, enjoy, recognize, and utilize the good things which come from beyond the boundaries of the Church, even those things outside the Christian world. We do not have a monopoly on the love of God. On the contrary, we are the flock of 99 sheep which God abandons in order to search for, and save, the one lost sheep. After many years of teaching the Catholic religion to youth, I am convinced of this. It seems to me that it is imperative to recognize the sparks of goodness and truth which exist in the world in order to better initiate a more relevant dialogue with those who have doubts or prejudices about the faith. Music is a realm where this totally applies and has been a valuable tool in my religion classes and other areas to reflect on certain aspects of my students lives — especially for those farthest from the faith — from an explicitly Christian point of view, although for them it appears entirely human.
